Meeting at the NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations

On March 14, the Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Artak Zakaryan, the Committee Tevan Poghosyan and the deputy Aghvan Vardanyan met with the Delegation of the Belgian and Flemish Parliamentarians.

Welcoming the guests Artak Zakaryan highlighted the development of the bilateral parliamentary relations, at the guests’ request touched upon Armenia-European Union relations, as well as the functions of Armenia in the frames of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEC) and the possibility of cooperation between the two Unions, the necessity of the development of the business ties with Armenia, taking into consideration the RA active role in the EEC.

Talking about the Nagorno Karabakh problem, Artak Zakaryan emphasized and highly assessed the role of the Minsk Group in the process of the peaceful settlement of the conflict. “Azerbaijan in any way tries to impede the peaceful settlement of the problem, but Armenia continues to be faithful to its conviction of solving the conflict through negotiations and peaceful means,” the Committee Chairman said.

In the course of the meeting the Armenian parliamentarians also referred to the RA Constitutional reforms and its impact on the RA inner and foreign policy, discussed the processes going on in the region and talked about a number of issues of bilateral interest.

The Vice President of the Flemish Parliament (Senate) Karl Vanlouwe, thanking his Armenian colleagues for the reception in the name of the Delegation, stressed the necessity of the development of the parliamentary relations and talked about the joint programmes to be implemented in a series of spheres. Welcoming the Armenian side’s position of the settlement of the conflict through peaceful means, Mr Vanlouwe expressed conviction that it will have a positive impact also on the region.

The problems of the Syrian refugees and the possibilities of Turkey-European Union cooperation were also touched upon.

Let us note that the Delegation of the Belgian and Flemish Parliaments will visit the Nagorno Karabakh. The Chairman of the Hay Dat/Armenian Cause Committee of Europe Gaspar Karapetyan and the member of the NA Standing Committee Tevan Poghosyan will accompany the Delegation.

At the end of the meeting the MPs agreed to meet again after the end of visit, to discuss the results and share the impressions of the visit to Artsakh.
